Voluntarias de la biblioteca móvil del Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona

Hospital volunteers donate their time, energy and desire to help others in an effort to make patients and their families have a more comfortable and positive stay while at the centre.

All of our volunteers willingly donate their time to us, an act that closely aligns with the values of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God.

Our team of volunteers works together and takes part in ongoing training sessions to expand their knowledge and be able to safely and efficiently volunteer with us. Some responsibilities of volunteers include organising activities, energising play areas, spending time with patients and families, organising charity events and managing various workshops for the children, among many other things.

Volunteers are present in practically every part of the Hospital. Furthermore, they are always working together with the fantastic team of professionals we have at the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital.

We currently have over 300 volunteers on our team. All of our volunteers have some values in common: hospitality, solidarity and commitment.

In the more than 150 years of this Hospital's history, we have always relied on the support and involvement of wider society. That is why volunteers are, and have always been, so important.

Type of volunteering

At SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, you can choose from two types of volunteering: clinical support and non-clinical support. In both cases, you will receive ongoing support from the hospital’s Volunteer Service.

Clinical support volunteering

This involves supporting patients and their families during their stay in Hospital. Some of the activities involved in this type of volunteering include:

  • Looking after children so that their parents can rest, ensuring that they are never left alone.
  • Helping out during mealtimes for the patient’s family members.
  • Accompanying them to the centre’s play and activity areas.

Requirements for joining the clinical support volunteering team

  • Aged between 18 and 75.
  • Availability for a minimum of 3 consecutive hours per week, between 08:00 a.m. and 08:00 p.m.
  • Willingness to attend a personal interview and preparatory training sessions.
  • Personal values and skills: empathy, sensitivity, respect, adaptability, confidentiality, hospitality, solidarity, responsibility and commitment.
Non-clinical support volunteering

A different way of volunteering, connecting with people and being part of a team committed to the social mission of Saint John of God.

This involves helping with charitable and community activities, which are important for ensuring the continuity of many of the hospital’s programmes that have a direct impact on our patients’ stay. Some of the activities you would be involved in include:

  • Flea markets held within the Hospital.
  • Helping out at the charity shop.
  • Supporting charity concerts and galas (outside the Hospital).
  • Other charitable initiatives both within and outside the Hospital.

'I've been a volunteer for more than ten years at the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, and without a doubt, it's one of the best decisions I've ever made'

Mercedes Rey-Stolle Volunteer

'When you do the volunteer training, you're given information about how to help, act and react in different situations, but nobody tells you what you get in return. Respect, affection and gratitude from so many families that it can be overwhelming at times. Being part of one of the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital's projects is a real privilege'.
