Congenital glaucoma

SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital is a leading national centre for the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric glaucoma, in its primary forms and in those associated with other conditions.

Surgical treatment for glaucoma is performed by using specific techniques for children (goniotomy) and other methods adapted to children's physiology.

  • Goniotomy is a very specific technique for young children with congenital glaucoma. It involves freeing up the abnormal membrane that obstructs eye fluid, in order to reduce ocular pressure. This can be done by sector and at intervals until the desired pressure is obtained.
  • Trabeculectomy and drainage devices are used in adults, but at SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital we have modified them to suit children.
