In the past, the region of Alt Urgell always had difficulties providing paediatric care, due to both a lack of professionals specialising in Paediatrics and the geographic location of the area.
In 2010, SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, together with a group of innovative paediatricians in the area, founded a cooperative society, Pediatria dels Pirineus, to provide healthcare both at primary care centres in the region and at the Hospital del Alt Urgell.
This management model, which is the first of its kind in Catalonia, at once gives greater prominence to professionals and ensures the integration of primary care and hospital care.
The professionals who form part of this cooperative participate in continuing education courses given at SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital Barcelona and are in regular contact with the centre.
The SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital is currently coordinating paediatric, gynaecological and obstetric care in the region of Alt Urgell.
