SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital and the Brazilian cancer hospital in Barretos sign a collaboration agreement
Hospital de Amor is one of the most important cancer treatment centres in Brazil and across Latin America
SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital and Hospital de Amor in the city of Barretos (Brazil), dedicated to treating patients with cancer, have signed an agreement to share their knowledge and experience in pediatric oncology in the areas of medical protocols, training and research.
Hospital de Amor in Barretos is one of the most important cancer centres in Brazil and across Latin America. It is, in fact, a complex of centres dedicated to cancer in adults and children.
It consists of the Cancer Hospital, which is dedicated to adults and, started in 1962, was the first part of the complex to be built. The centre also includes the Children and Young Adults Cancer Hospital, a palliative care centre renowned for the Hospital San Judas Tadeo, a minimally invasive surgery development centre associated with the IRCAD (Research Institute against Digestive Cancer) in Strasbourg (France) and the Social and Cultural Centre, whose aim is to improve the experiences of patients and their families through cultural and artistic activities.
Lastly, is the Centre for Molecular Research in Prevention, funded by a Brazilian Government initiative to promote basic and translational research in cancer.
To improve its cancer care, Hospital de Amor has expanded in recent years with two centres outside the city of Barretos. The first of these was inaugurated in 2010 in the city of Jales, in the north-east of the State of São Paulo, and covers that area as well as the Mato Grosso, Goiás and Minas Gerais regions. The second, still under construction, is the Amazon Cancer Hospital, an extension of the service provided since 2012 by Hospital de Amor in the city of Porto Velho, the capital of the state of Rondonia, which borders the Amazon, Mato Grosso and Bolivia.
SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital and Hospital de Amor in Barretos share a number of similarities in terms of their accomplishments and character. They are both non-profit organisations which have working agreements with the public health services in their respective countries, and they share a common interest in offering the most advanced cancer treatments, while also providing increasingly compassionate care, recognising how difficult it is for families living through this situation.
SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, which will open its Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona in the first half of 2022, and Hospital de Amor in Barretos highly value their accomplishments in the treatment of childhood cancer. These diseases, so devastating for the families, are difficult to manage due to their low incidence in the child population, but in their endeavour to improve outcomes, the two centres have now agreed to share their experiences.
