I graduated in Medicine from the Universitat de Barcelona and trained as a paediatric specialist at the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital. I completed my training with a Master's Degree in Tropical Medicine and a Master's Degree in Management in NGOs. I obtained my PhD in Paediatrics from the Universitat de Barcelona with a thesis entitled ‘The impact of malnutrition, anaemia and malaria on the psychomotor development of infants aged 0 to 18 months in Ifakara (Tanzania)’, and subsequently completed a Master's Degree in Statistics and Epidemiology in Public Health.
I have developed my professional career at the SJD Hospital and at the Institut de Salut Global Barcelona. I have worked in Tanzania, Mozambique and Sierra Leone, focusing my work on child malnutrition and infectious diseases in low-income countries.
I currently work in the Infectious Diseases Department at the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital. I am responsible for the National Reference Unit for Imported and Tropical Diseases (CSUR) and the High Isolation Unit for Highly Infectious Diseases (CSUR). I also combine this work with research and teaching at the Universitat de Barcelona. Since 2018, I have been directing the international cooperation unit at SJD and the training of residents in this field.
In 1995, I founded the organisation I run, Fundación África Viva. From there, I coordinate health training programmes in Ethiopia and Sierra Leone, as well as rehabilitation and nutritional research projects in several African countries.
