The moment when the isobaric hypoxia test was carried out by GREFA staff

The Respiratory and Allergy Functional Testing Unit (GEFRA) at Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Hospital carries out respiratory and allergy function tests and administers immunotherapy treatments.

Most of the patients treated at GEFRA have chronic conditions, many of which are highly complex, requiring thorough monitoring and ongoing care. For this reason, the clinic works in close collaboration with other specialists to provide comprehensive, safe care tailored to the individual needs of each patient.

At GEFRA, a range of respiratory and allergy function tests are carried out, and immunotherapy treatments are administered. Tests can be carried out either on an outpatient basis or during a hospital stay. These tests are usually linked to a medical consultation, which may be in person or by telephone, and which is typically carried out on the same day or in the days following the test, to ensure that the results are properly assessed and monitored.

Instructions for taking tests at GREFA

Before carrying out the test or administering the treatment

It is important to bear in mind the optimal conditions for carrying out tests or administering treatment.

If the patient is not in the best condition for the test or treatment, you should contact the hospital by telephone to reschedule the appointment. The hospital’s telephone number is 93 253 21 00.

On the day of the test or treatment

  • Family members or accompanying persons should inform GREFA staff if the patient is experiencing any of the following symptoms: cough, fever, shortness of breath, vomiting, diarrhoea, general malaise, skin rashes, or any other symptoms you consider relevant.
  • In the case of respiratory function tests, we will inform you that the patient will enter the test room alone, provided their age and condition allow it. A nurse will accompany the patient at all times.
  • We recommend bringing something to keep yourself occupied whilst waiting.

After the test or treatment has been carried out

Once the test or treatment has finished, we will let you know whether you need to wait and where, or whether you can go home.
