Josep Rubio, the only maxillofacial surgeon invited to participate in the world congress of cleft lip and palate of India

12 September 2016

A surgeon in the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Josep Rubio, is the only Spanish maxillofacial surgeon who has been invited to participate in the world congress of cleft lip and palate to be held in India from Saturday 24 October.

A surgeon in the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Josep Rubio, is the only Spanish maxillofacial surgeon who has been invited to participate in the world congress of cleft lip and palate to be held in India from Saturday 24 October.

Rubio will announce to maxillofacial surgeons around the world the experience of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in the planning of the complex interventions for the treatment of the craniofacial deformities through 3D.

The surgical planning with 3D allows reducing the duration of the intervention, to foresee possible difficulties and complications to study how to avoid them, and increases the accuracy. The handicap that presents, at the present time, is the cost.

The Hospital Sant Joan de Déu has been a pioneer in the implementation of the 3D in the world of the surgery. It has been the first hospital in Spain to use a copy in 3D for planning an intervention extremely complex: the removal of a neuroblastoma, a very aggressive tumor and difficult to remove because it surrounded arteries and vital organs. This intervention was carried out in 2014 by a team led by the surgeon Lucas Krauel.
