The SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital inaugurates its new rehabilitation facility for international patients

In 2024, the SJD Rehabilitation Department welcomed approximately 250 international patients and conducted 5,000 rehabilitation sessions.
International patients at the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital are already benefitting from the new facilities at the Rehabilitation Center located at C/ Urgell 143 in Barcelona. In line with the service offering available at the Rehabilitation Department at the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, staff at this facility offer a personalised approach to every patient, focusing on the recovery needs of each individual, whether for neurological rehabilitation or musculoskeletal conditions.
This almost 300 m² facility has been designed with privacy and comfort in mind, creating a safe space for the child, family members and the therapist in which to conduct medical visits and provide treatment. On the first day of treatment, families receive an initial welcome and are given the patient's treatment schedule.
The facilities boast several adapted spaces:
- Psychomotor stimulation room, with patient resources for play and motor coordination.
- Sensory stimulation room, designed for children who need a sensory/motor approach to treatment, with fibre optics, a bubble column, a projector and a coloured lights game.
- Motor rehabilitation area and occupational therapy, with various materials to promote effective rehabilitation work, such as walkers, bicycles and more. Therapists have access to tools for customising a functional and/or postural splint for upper limbs.
- Speech therapy area, equipped for working with augmentative and alternative communication tools.
- Respiratory physiotherapy space, designed to aid recovery and improve lung function.
In addition, the center has exterior spaces that allow patients to work in fresh air, strengthening their motor and sensory recovery in a fun and stimulating manner. There are also adapted locker rooms, a waiting room and an outside terrace.
These new facilities reaffirm SJD's commitment to comprehensive, personalised rehabilitation for children, offering a safe, stimulating and welcoming space to international families.
Sofya's story
Sofya is an 11-year-old patient from Armenia who had surgery at the SJD Orthopedics and Traumatology Department to treat pes cavus. This is a foot deformity where the plantar arch is higher than usual. Sofya is currently following a rehabilitation program at this new facility to help her recover after the operation. Her mother, Suzanna, says: ‘This facility is very spacious, calming and it has a lot of natural light. Plus, it's very well located and it's easy to get to using public transport. For my daughter, coming here is like going to the gym. It’s not the same as having to go to the hospital.’
