The diseases affecting the skin, nails and hair are the focus of the Dermatology Department at the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, whether mild or high-complexity cases.

We treat all kinds of skin, nail and hair diseases in children, from the most common, to rare hereditary or acquired diseases in their most severe forms. We also treat problems caused by internal disease processes that manifest on the skin.

The SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital is a leading healthcare reference centre both in Spain and abroad. Staffed with a highly specialised team of dermatologists, with vast experience in childhood dermatological diseases, we are at the vanguard of research and investigation.

We boast specialised care units for hemangiomas and vascular malformations, epidermolysis bullosa, keratinisation disorders and ichthyosis, genodermatosis, hair and nail diseases, congenital melanocytic nevi, connective tissue diseases, neurocutaneous diseases and we also have a Laser Unit.

We are pioneers in treating, diagnosing and researching hemangiomas, venous malformations, lymphatic malformations, arterial malformations, capillary malformations (port-wine stains) and overgrowth syndromes associated with vascular malformations.

The Pediatric Dermatology Department at the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital has been recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Health as a CSUR reference service for its treatment of epidermolysis bullosa and other keratinisation disorders/ichthyosis. We are members of the European Reference Network for rare skin diseases (ERN-Skin). This network connects healthcare centres that are experts in the management of rare skin diseases, so that, together, they can work towards better treatment and diagnosis of patients suffering from these rare diseases. We are also part of the VASCERN - VASCA (Vascular Anomalies Working Group) European network for vascular lesions.

We are committed to, and firmly believe in, the empowerment of patients and their direct caregivers, as they know their body and their disease best. As such, we have launched the Atopy Academy to help raise awareness of the causes of skin hypersensitivity, why eczema flare-ups happen, and how to control and prevent them.

Our experience

The Paediatric Dermatology Department is actively researching haemangiomas and vascular malformations in collaboration with IDIBELL, VASCA-ERN, and the American Hemangioma Investigator Group (HIG). We take part in most pharmacological clinical trials on medications for dermatological diseases, haemangiomas, and vascular diseases in children.

Research and clinical trials

The Paediatric Dermatology Service has an active translational research line in haemangiomas and vascular lesions. For years we have been characterising genetically all vascular malformations and mutated cell lines have been established. Likewise, in collaboration with the José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation, we are developing animal models for different vascular malformations and we have a line of research on the natural history of vascular malformations and tumours.

We conduct clinical trials with novel drugs to treat paediatric dermatological pathology and we are very active in clinical trials for atopy, psoriasis, chronic urticaria, epidermolysis bullosa and ichthyosis.
