International Society of Paediatric Oncology visits the future Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona

During the visit, the SIOP delegation was able to learn about the model of care for children and young people with cancer at the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital.

On Friday, February 11, a delegation from the Board of Directors of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) visited the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and was also able to see the state of the building works of the SJD Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona, the new facility that the Hospital will open next summer to offer a comprehensive care to children with cancer.

The SIOP delegation has been in Barcelona for the preparatory work for the next world congress of this scientific society that brings together all pediatric oncologists worldwide, being  held in the city at the end of September 2022. The Scientific Director of the Pediatric Oncology Area of the Hospital, Dr Jaume Mora, is the President of the Local Organizing Committee of this congress which will be the first to be held face-to-face after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The visit was attended by the President of the SIOP, Dr Kathy Pritchard-Jones, Professor of Pediatric Oncology at University College London (UCL) Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health;  Dr Guillermo Chantada, President-elect of SIOP, Scientific Director of Pediatric Oncology at the Austral University Hospital of Argentina, Pereira Rossell Hospital in Montevideo and senior researcher associated with the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital; Dr Julia Chalinor, Secretary General of the SIOP, currently an international consultant on multiple projects in the field of pediatric oncology launched by World Health Organization and other global organizations; and Ms Susanne Wollaert, Executive Director of SIOP.

The management of SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and the new Pediatric Cancer Center had the opportunity to present the model of care for children and young people with cancer and their families, integrating the most advanced treatment protocols, the most pioneering research and a humanistic, patient- and family-centered way of caring for the child, parents, and their environment.
