Pediatric Dermatology Unit activity focuses on both mild and highly complex conditions affecting the skin, nails and hair.
In the Pediatric Dermatology Department, we treat all skin, nail and hair diseases in children, from the most common, to the rarest congenital and acquired diseases, especially in their most severe form. We also treat skin manifestations of other internal diseases.
SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital is a national and international reference centre with a team of highly specialised dermatologists with extensive experience in childhood dermatological diseases, as well as a leader in research.
We have specialized care units for haemangiomas and vascular malformations, epidermolysis bullosa, keratinisation disorders and ichthyosis, genodermatoses, hair and nail diseases, congenital melanocytic nevus, connective tissue diseases, neurocutaneous diseases and a Laser Unit.
We are pioneers in the treatment, diagnosis, and research of haemangiomas, venous malformations, lymphatic malformations, arteriovenous malformations, capillary malformations (port-wine stains), and overgrowth syndromes associated with vascular malformations.
The Pediatric Dermatology Department at SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital has been recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Health as a department of reference (CSUR (Centres, Departments and Units of Reference)) in the treatment of epidermolysis bullosa and keratinisation disorders/icthyosis. We are members of the European Reference Network for Rare Skin Diseases (ERN-SKIN), a network that unites centres of expertise in the management of rare skin diseases to collaborate in the best treatment and diagnosis of patients suffering from these diseases that are not prevalent in the general population. We are also part of the ERN VASCERN network for vascular anomalies.
We are committed and we firmly believe in empowering the patient and their direct caregivers, as the main experts on their body and their disease. To this end, we have launched a School of Atopia to raise awareness of the cause of skin hypersensitivity, why outbreaks of eczema occur, and how to control and prevent them.

We have more than 30 years of experience
The Pediatric Dermatology Department at SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital has been dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of skin, nail and hair diseases in children and adolescents for more than 30 years. We have health professionals with nationally and internationally recognised experience in pediatric dermatology.
Our specialists have all the necessary resources to offer comprehensive, age-appropriate, family-focused care to children and adolescents. All the diagnostic tests and procedures carried out are adapted to the patient's age. Children are not small adults and they have specific dermatological diseases that require treatment from pediatric dermatologists with experience in the diagnosis and management of these diseases.

We conduct numerous clinical research studies; we take part in most clinical trials on new treatments for dermatological diseases (haemangiomas and vascular malformations, atopy, psoriasis, and epidermolysis bullosa) and we collaborate in European and American networks and registers that allow us to be in the front line of the latest discoveries in dermatological diseases.
We are the only pediatric centres in Spain with different types of lasers for the treatment of vascular malformations, pigmented lesions, and epidermal nevi. Each year, we perform more than 200 laser treatments under general anaesthesia, ensuring they are painless.

We take a holistic approach to each case, working in multidisciplinary teams.
Multidisciplinary care focused on the child and their family
We take a holistic approach to each case, working in multidisciplinary teams
We take a holistic approach to each case, working in multidisciplinary teams with other specialists in pediatrics, with constant and direct communication, in order to get a global overview of children with rare dermatological conditions or more severe forms of more common diseases. As far as possible, we make sure appointments with different specialists are scheduled for the same day.
The explorations we perform, as well as the diagnostic techniques and treatments we use, are suited to the patient's age.
We support patients with chronic dermatological conditions throughout the entire process and we work with adult hospitals to ensure that patients have continuity of treatment once they reach adulthood. If the condition affects other aspects of the child's health, we work as a team with specialists from other departments of our Hospital.
