12 December 2025

The congress where Dr Krauel, Dr Roca and Dr Mora participated strengthens scientific exchange and advances a new model of international collaboration in childhood cancer care.

The 2025 China Pediatric Oncology Frontier Forum, hosted by Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center and co-organized by SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital, was successfully held in Guangzhou in late November 2025.

Dr Jaume Mora, Research Director of the Hematologic Oncology Department at SJD, delivered an online keynote lecture, while Dr Lucas Krauel, Head of Pediatric Oncology Surgery, and Dr Isabel Roca, Director of the Nuclear Medicine Center, gave in person presentation at the conference and visited Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center.

Experts attending this Congress represented leading pediatric oncology institutions in China, as well as internationally renowned children's hospitals, including SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (USA). Three experts from SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital presented special reports on cutting-edge topics in pediatric oncology.

Dr Jaume Mora presented "The origins of Ewing sarcoma", providing an in-depth analysis of the disease's pathogenesis. His research team has recently published findings identifying novel therapeutic targets for Ewing sarcoma, that are offering new directions for future treatment strategies.

Dr Lucas Krauel focused on "New technologies and strategies in pediatric surgical oncology," highlighting innovative applications such as 3D printing and precision surgery. A senior expert in pediatric oncology surgery, Dr Lucas Krauel possesses extensive clinical expertise and is deeply committed to advancing innovative surgical approaches, including 3D virtual planning, 3D printing technologies, novel drug delivery systems for local tumor control, and the development of biocompatible materials and medical devices.

Recently, Dr Lucas Krauel was invited by Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center to participate in an academic exchange meeting focused on cutting-edge strategies for complex pediatric oncology surgery.

Dr Isabel Roca delivered a presentation entitled "Nuclear Medicine Imaging in Neuroblastoma: Current Status and New Developments", showcasing the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advancements developed at SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital.

Hospital Visit and Academic Exchange

During the visit, Dr Lucas Krauel and Dr Isabel Roca toured the pediatric oncology ward, experimental research department, radiotherapy center, and nuclear medicine department at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, where they engaged in in-depth and friendly exchanges with clinical and research staff.

Strengthening International Collaboration in Pediatric Oncology

SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital and Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center are working together to build a new “borderless” model for pediatric oncology care. Beyond academic exchanges, the two institutions have established a close partnership in joint multidisciplinary consultations, successfully developing personalized treatment plans for numerous Chinese children with refractory and rare cancers.

Looking ahead, SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital aims to further deepen its collaboration with Chinese paediatric oncology institutions—represented by Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center—so that its research, clinical expertise, and nursing experience can benefit more children across China.
